 Milwaukee County Historical Society
This is a work in progress, but the journey is fun. As a member of the board of directors Mo has been involved with the Historical Society for several years. Apart from simply building awareness, the Society has critical need to develop new revenue streams. And if that is not enough of a challenge, we have recently closed our Historical Center for renovation for what may be a full year.
One strike of good fortune to hit was that the Center was a location for filming Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp. The building, designed by the architectural firm of Kirchoff and Rose, is an elaborately detailed neoclassical revival structure on the corner of Third and Kilbourn. Completed in 1913, it is the third building on the same site to house the Second Ward Savings Bank. By the time the movie releases in 2009, the Center will be open again and fans can see the massive bank vault that Johnny robbed.
With the generous help of Stream Creative, we have completely reworked the Society’s web site so that the general public can learn about its collections, library resources and historic properties. In promoting a greater appreciation of Milwaukee County's heritage, the Historical Society hopes to develop a better understanding of the issues and challenges facing Milwaukee County today.
Next up will be to make the online Museum Store fully functional so the Society can increase sales of books like Milwaukee at Mid-Century: The Photographs of Lyle Oberwise. Featuring over 150 color photographs taken by reclusive amateur photographer Lyle Oberwise, this is the first publication devoted to the work of this prodigious documentarian.
